Gryphon

From GryphonWiki

http://www.textdomolod.com A Gryphon (also known as a griffin, griffon, gryffin, gryphen, and gryphin, among other spellings) is a mythical chimeric creature. Traditionally, it is a quadrupedal combination of lion and eagle; however, many variations are accepted and common in the Guild, furry fandom, and fantasy communities. The most common combinations are avian-feline, but avian-canine and draconic variations are also popular.

Anatomy

The typic gryphon is avian in the fore and feline in the hind. The head, forelegs and wings are that of an eagle, while the hind legs and tail are that of a lion. It is important to note that traditionally, gryphons sport visible, often equine, outer ears.

Popular and contemporary depictions of gryphons show a great deal of variation. In addition to departing from the traditional lion/eagle combination, they may sport feline forelegs instead of avian talons, a snake tail (or even a snake for a tail), an avian tail, a tail that combines avian and mammalian traits (such feathered tufts at the tip or feathered bases), ear tufts (feathered tufts such as sported by some owl species) instead of actual outer ears, or, more rarely, no ears at all. While raptors (also known as birds of prey) are the most common avian components, some gryphons sport the anatomy of birds as diverse as penguins, ducks and hummingbirds. Some gryphons have no wings, or show avian hind legs and feline forelegs.

Hybrids

Common hybrids and deviations from the avian/feline gryphon include the hippogryph (traditionally the result of a mare and gryphon pairing), various canine gryphons such as the vulpegryph (fox gryphon) and lupogryph (wolf gryphon), and a dragon/gryphon cross often known as a dracogryph or Grygon.
